Forum Feeds on the website

Postby The Elders » Sat 10 Nov 2012, 2:58 am

The new website has a variety of feeds to use. This allows members to choose the feed or feeds that most suit their needs.

The feeds available for members to use are described below. Please note that you are only able to view feeds of posts and forums that you have access to, for example the OAP Teams can only see posts in their feeds from their respective forums and only the Elders can see posts in the Elder forums.

All posts - shows all recent posts to members that would be visible to them on the website

Latest new posts - shows the latest new post in each forum

New topics - shows one post in each new topic

Active topics - shows the latest post for each active topic

Individual forums - each forum has its own feed showing all recent posts

Individual topics - each topic has its own feed showing all recent posts

To use these feeds, you will need to use authentication, which means amending the basic feed URL as detailed below. If you try to use the basic feed URLs, you will either only see posts made in forums that are open to everyone or in some cases you won't see any posts at all.

The basic feed URLs are:

All posts
http://www.oaps.org/main/feed.php

Latest new posts
http://www.oaps.org/main/feed.php?mode=forums

New topics
http://www.oaps.org/main/feed.php?mode=topics

Active topics
http://www.oaps.org/main/feed.php?mode=topics_active

Individual forums
For forum feeds, visit a forum and copy the ?f=number which appears immediately after ? in the URL and add that after feed.php in the All posts feed
e.g. http://www.oaps.org/main/feed.php?f=52 for PlayStation General Chat

Individual topics
For topic feeds, visit a topic and copy the ?f=number&t=number which appears immediately after ? in the URL and add that after feed.php in the All posts feed
e.g. http://www.oaps.org/main/feed.php?f=52&t=164 for European Store Updates topic in PlayStation General Chat

To change these to authenticated feeds, you must add your username and password separated by a colon and an @ after the http:// and add auth=http at the end of the All posts URL (&auth=http for all other feeds). Your feeds will then look like this:

All posts
http://username:password@www.oaps.org/main/feed.php?auth=http

Latest new posts
http://username:password@www.oaps.org/main/feed.php?mode=forums&auth=http

New topics
http://username:password@www.oaps.org/main/feed.php?mode=topics&auth=http

Active topics
http://username:password@www.oaps.org/main/feed.php?mode=topics_active&auth=http

Individual forums
http://username:password@www.oaps.org/main/feed.php?f=number&auth=http

Individual topics
http://username:password@www.oaps.org/main/feed.php?f=number&t=number&auth=http

Some feed readers such as Google Reader do not support authenticated feeds. Members who use one of these readers could use a service like Free My Feed https://freemyfeed.com/ to free their feeds from authentication for use in these feed readers. If you decide to use this service, please read the information on the service carefully and we would recommend that you change your OAP password so that it is unique to this website and you don't use it anywhere else.

EDIT:
Feeds now authenticate correctly, there's no need for the username:password@ hack in the URL.
For an RSS aggregator which will allow authentication, simply use the feed URL above, but without the "username:password@" in it. So the all-posts feed would be:

http://www.oaps.org/main/feed.php?auth=http

and enter your username and password in the aggregator. This is no more secure, but it just means the RSS feed works with an aggregator that supports authentication.
